Shennong’s Pharmacopoeia is an ancient medical text that’s over 2000 years old. Within, it claims that reishi “lengthens your life and turns you into one like the immortal who never dies.” That sounds pretty cool, if maybe a bit of a stretch. He goes so far as to call it the “rarest of jewels in Nature.” For meditation, we can’t exactly find a researcher who’s going to back up the mushroom’s ability here. Rather, we can gaze back into its uses throughout history. In the book, he says “it was routinely used by mountain hermits, monks, Taoist adepts and spiritual seekers throughout Asia because it was believed to help calm the mind, ease tension, strengthen the nerves, strengthen memory, sharpen concentration, improve focus, build will power and, as a result, help build wisdom (90).” Sounds pretty righteous.
