Millions of articles exist about the benefits of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Whether it’s fish oil, salmon, or krill oil, people have been supplementing to increase these good fats for decades. However, the most popular sources are not vegan or sustainable. The environmental devastation caused by overfishing and bycatch has serious repercussions for ocean habitats. To make fish oil and krill oil pills, the lives of many anchovies and krill are ended. Not only are their lives valid and worth protecting, but the reduction of anchovy and krill populations has a deadly impact for the entire ecosystem, food chain, ocean, and planet.
Fortunately, there are more humane and environmentally responsible ways to consume omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Hemp seed is a near complete plant protein with additional fiber and both essential fats. 25% of calories in hemp seed come from protein. Not only can you reduce your impact on wildlife habitats, but the composition of a hemp seed is more beneficial than that of an extracted oil (from a small living creature.) Hemp seed powder also aids in digestion and promotes healthy body weight with dietary fiber.
Our bodies can produce most of the fats we need to function from a culmination of foods that we consume. But the same cannot be said for omega-3s. Just like certain amino acids, they are considered “essential.” Essentially, this means we can only get them from eating certain foods. Hemp seed meal has a high percentage of protein digestibility. Researchers suggest hemp seed meal and dehulled hemp seed provide an equal or greater amount of total protein digestibility compared to nuts, grains, and pulses.
Omega-6 has long been touted for its cardiovascular benefits. Dietary guidelines recommend consuming these fatty acids to lower LDL cholesterol, increase HDL, and reduce the risk of heart disease. The same is said for omega 3, and they are also shown to regulate clotting and reduce inflammation in the arteries.
Uplift Florae Plant Power Vegan Protein contains hemp seed powder. We incorporate this ingredient for its rich composition of essential fatty acids, fiber, and protein. By providing a vegan option to swap out whey, fish oil, krill oil, and other animal products, we hope to promote a shift toward more sustainable and ethical sources of nutrition.
